Dumb Friends League waiving cat, kitten adoption fees

DENVER (Sept. 26, 2011) Did you know the number of cats needing homes at the Dumb Friends League right now is almost 730? Did you also know that their cat population outnumbers nearly 100 incorporated municipalities of Colorado?

In an effort to increase feline adoptions, the area’s largest animal welfare organization is waiving adoption fees through Oct. 31 for all cats 1 year or older. Adoption fees for cats under 1 year are reduced to $50.

“Since March, we have seen more than 6,000 cats and kittens come through our doors at both of our shelters,” Bob Rohde, president and CEO of the League, said. “We are here to serve animals in need and be a voice for them, but now more than ever, we need our pet-loving community to help homeless cats find permanent homes.”

The feline adoption specials are offered at both shelters—the Quebec Street shelter in Denver and the Buddy Center in Castle Rock—as well as at the satellite adoption center in Northfield Stapleton and anywhere our mobile adoption unit travels.  The adoption package includes a spay/neuter surgery, microchip ID implant, initial vaccinations and a free office visit with a participating veterinarian. The League spends approximately $300 on each homeless pet it receives, including shelter, foster and medical care, and adoption services.

“Cats do not belong in shelters, they belong in loving homes,” Theresa Geary, vice president of operations, said. “If you are considering adopting a cat, now is the time.”

People who cannot adopt at this time, but still want to help, can apply to become foster parents for pets in need. Foster volunteers provide temporary care in their homes until an animal is ready for adoption or until space is available at the shelters. The League provides foster-care volunteers with food and supplies, as well as veterinary care as needed.

“We need everyone’s help to prevent more unwanted pets from coming through our doors,” Geary said. “It’s essential for people with unaltered pets to have them spayed or neutered.”

In addition to spaying and neutering every adoptable pet at both shelters, the League also offers donor-subsidized spay/neuter surgeries for pets in underserved areas of Metro Denver. These surgeries are performed by licensed veterinarians on the League’s two mobile clinics, the Meow Mobile and the Lulu Mobile.
