Denver cold weather shelter plan in full effect for the homeless

Cooler temperatures and forecasted snow has prompted Denver’s Road Home and Denver Human Services to initiate its seasonal Cold Weather and Emergency Shelter plan. In partnership with The Delores Project, Urban Peak and Salvation Army, the Cold Weather Plan connects the homeless with a safe and warm place to stay during frigid temperatures.

Tips: how to dispose of trees and branches damaged in storm

Tips: how to dispose of trees and branches damaged in storm

Denver Forestry and Xcel Energy offer the following advice:

Removing snow from trees:

* Check to make sure the tree is safe and clear of all utility lines prior to removing snow; do not attempt to shake snow off of a tree if a utility line is going through it.
* If the tree is clear of utility lines, using a broom, remove as much snow as possible from branches.
*Do not attempt to climb tree or use ladder to reach higher limbs.

Fallen power lines:

* Sometimes branches heavy with snow take down power lines/cables. Stay clear of downed lines and report them immediately to Xcel Energy at 1-800-895-1999. If a power line has fallen onto a vehicle, stay away from the vehicle. Seek help immediately by calling 911.

Due to the expected size of the predicted snow storm, as well as the amount of leaves still on the trees, Xcel Energy is taking additional measures to assure that any widespread or prolonged power outages that may occur are handled as quickly as possible. The company is bringing  crews from Grand Junction to assist, plus crews from Texas are prepared to help with outages too.
